An Unexpected Visitor

We heard a knock at the door of our classroom we looked to see who it was and it was Meng Foon the mayor of Gisborne. He called in because he was waiting down at Hamanatua stream for us. He didn't know that we had postponed it because of the rain. When he came in we told him about our actions speak louder than words project.
The mayor kindly let us have a photo with him here it is to prove it!

Hamanatua Stream

This term our focus has been actions speak louder than words. We have been doing projects down at hamanatua stream. My groups project was signage. We created signs to put down at hamanatua stream. We were meant to  have an open day but we had to postpone it because the weather was bad. We were recently down there planting, here are some  photos.

Why we should Ban Plastic bags!

Over the last term we have been writing speeches in room 1. Last week I shared my speech with  my class. Although I didn't get into the finals with my speech I am really proud of it. Here's my speech, hope you enjoy.  :)

Why We Should Ban PLastic Bags!

Did you know that you can never actually ‘throw away’ a plastic bag? They just sit around in our environment for 500 to 1000 years slowly breaking down and killing our animals. Hi I’m Hazel and I’m here to tell you what plastic bags are doing to our environment and what we can use instead of them.

Did you know that one trillion to five trillion plastic bags are used each year, that's about 160,000 a second! If you throw your plastic bags into a landfill they can mix with other materials when it rains. That then creates a toxic sludge called leachate. Leachate then leaks into the ground. Then it mixes with our groundwater, rivers and streams polluting them and killing the creatures living in them. Did you know that only 2.5 percent of water on earth is drinkable. If this keeps happening then what will we drink?

So who invented plastic bags? Leo Hendrik Baekeland invented plastic in 1907. Over 8 million tonnes of plastic is dumped into our oceans each year. Over 10,000 marine creatures are killed each year by plastic. By 2050 there will be more plastic in our oceans than fish. Most plastic bags are waterproof and photodegradable this means that they slowly break down into smaller pieces with the help of sunlight. Fish then eat the smaller pieces of plastic, we then catch the fish and eat them. ‘GREAT’ so that means that were eating plastic to.

Why use plastic bags when there are plenty more eco friendly options? You could always use tote bags/cloth bags, boxes, eco friendly bags, paper bags, kete you could even bring a bucket or wheel barrow to the supermarket or just say no to bags altogether. Shops are making plastic bags cost 10 to 15 cents the use of plastic bags has dropped and is still slowly dropping. Do you or anyone you  know ever make unexpected purchases and you bye so much that you just have to take a plastic bag? Well there's an easy solution to that too. The solution is to keep a stash of tote bags or reusable bags hidden away in your car or truck, just incase. By 2020 New Zealand IS going to be  single use plastic bag free, Don't you think that's awesome?! Countdown is already on their way to becoming plastic bag free hopefully paknsave will soon follow them to becoming plastic bag free.

So,what do you think about plastic bags now, would you like to use them? It's not plastics fault it's ours. Bye Im Hazel and I strongly believe that we should ban plastic bags, what do you think?

H HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME

“ Woohoo!, it's finally my birthday.” I felt so happy and excited that my birthday had finally come. Mmmm... I smelt chocolate cake. I heard pots clanging together. Quickly I jumped out of my bed and ran down to the kitchen. What? Although it was My birthday, I didn't expect to get a huge chocolate cake and a mountain of presents. Quickly, eagerly and excitedly, I ran towards the chocolate cake and admired the candles. Why is it that my birthday only lasts a day? “HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME - “WOOSH!”

With Good Friends We Have Hope

In room 1 we took a look at bullying and how we can stop it happening we did a doc where we had to find a bullying quote and explain what it means to us and why we chose it here's mine.

Learning Intention: I am sharing my thoughts about bullying at school
Bullying Quotes: Character Reflection

I chose this quote because i think you should show respect towards everyone even if they don't deserve it. If they are bullying you can tell them that it is bad and they shouldn't do it, stick up for the victim but don't be mean to the bully otherwise you become the bully. Here's our wall the chain is about what we would do to stop bullying what i would do is tell a trusted adult, tell the bully that bullying is unacceptable and they shouldn't do it  and ask the victim if they would like to play with you.

Duathalon

LI: I am sharing some of my ideas, feelings and thoughts on my blog about the
     Duathlon  today!

Success Criteria:
  • It makes sense when I read it
  • I have used capital letters and full stops correctly
  • I have had my blogging buddy check my blog before I publish

Butterflies were in my stomach. BANG! The year 5 girls were off like lightning. We zoomed around the first two laps. (I didn't I saved my energy for the bike.) I puffed up the hill to my bike. I climbed on and started biking everything was blurry I must of been going 100 miles per hour I was red my heart felt like it was about to pop out of my chest. I had finished the two laps in no time. I dragged my bike over to some grass dropped it off were Miss Harris was. There was no time to lose I sprinted down the hill I could hear cameras flashing, people cheering and my heart beating really fast. I had finally finished I sat down back on the tarp where I started and took a long swig from my water bottle.
How I felt after the duathlon tired, hot and sweaty.

Digital Dig

Today in room 1 we did a digital dig with Miss Ducky, this tells her what keyboard shortcuts we know this is my top tip.

We also did maths on the other side did you know that a radius is a line from the mid point to the side. did you know that a 90° is also called a right angle.
