Term 4 Summary

This term has been a blast! We have been surfing, competing in athletics, gone to intermediate open days,  kapa haka,  just dance, year six item and we are about to start swimming!  I have really enjoyed my final term at Wainui. There has been one thing that I have enjoyed a little above others which was our inquiry topic - Culture city.

I have enjoyed finding out lots of interesting facts. We are going to turn all of our information into a book. We had to find out about each cultures Drama, Dance, Visual arts and Music. I have written a blogpost on Kapa Haka. We competed in ball throw, sprints, long jump and  high jump for athletics. It was really fun doing just dance in the mornings, we danced to lots of different songs from different cultures with actions. Year sixes get to go surfing every friday morning if they would like to. We  even got to have a fun day out at our chosen intermediates.

We are creating a dish from a culture to bring in for a shared morning tea. I am making something from South America! We got up to lots of other cool things this term but these were my highlights. I am super excited for next year. :)

Turanganui Kapa Haka Festival

Kia ora, yesterday ( the 20th of November) our school was lucky enough to head to the Turanganui Kapa Haka festival. It was held at the Gisborne A & P showgrounds. The girls had to put on our dresses, get our Moko kauae done and apply black lipstick before we were able to leave. We had to be careful that nothing smudged while we were eating and drinking.

Girls poi
As we walked onto the stage the crowd went wild and cameras flashed. Hunter (our kaea) started our pepeha. Then Haramai a paoa. After we sang and did our actions to Ka pioioi. Then it was time for the poi the moment I had most been looking forward to. So much time and effort had gone into this and it was finally my time to shine. "poi kamau" Yelled Matiria. In time with everyone else I pulled out my poi. Then she called Purianei toru wha. We began swinging our poi. As we finished I beamed with pride I had done it!

We kept progressing through our bracket. Utaina, Ka mate (haka), Wainui e and to finish E honore. All up our time on stage lasted around fifteen minutes. Although we weren't on for very long it felt like ages. Over all I would give the experience a five out of five stars. I really enjoyed myself. I wonder if my intermediate will  have a Kapa Haka group.

Duolingo

Hola, I have been learning Spanish on a website called Duolingo. I have been doing it for around two weeks. It is so much fun. I decided to learn Spanish so that I could have some conversations with my friend Josefa, who is Spanish. As you get better you are put in different leagues. I am currently in the silver league. I would definitely recommend trying Duolingo!

Speeches

This week in MLH our focus is speeches. All of our quick writes and writing workshops are on them. I am really enjoying writing mine. Everyone's speeches this year have to be about or relate to Hauora. I am doing mine on plastic. That relates to Hauora because it relates to the health and wellbeing of our planet. Here is what I have completed so far. (it needs quite a bit of editing) :)

Google summit

The Google Summit was AWESOME!!! I had so much fun. The Google Summit took place in a school in Auckland, the school was called Mataua Ngaru. We presented our presentation on My Maps, Tour creator,  Tour builder and Story spheres. I feel that our presentation went really well.

We ended up attending a robot workshop (ozobots) and a piano one (makey makey). They were both really fun. Afterwards there was a prize giving, I won some chromebook stickers and some virtual reality glasses.

After the Google Summit we headed to the museum (way better than the one in Gisborne). Then we headed out to dinner, I had spaghetti bolognese. Then we headed to an amazing ice cream shop.  We got to stay in a three story mansion. We traveled to Auckland on Thursday morning and came back on saturday afternoon. I would probably give the Google Summit a five out of five stars!

Cross country

Earlier today we headed down to the cross country track, it was finally the big day. All of our hard training had lead up to this  moment. We started. The year six girls ran two whole laps. After I was super hot. I didn't find out my placing as I came in with a few other girls. It was loads of fun.

Afterwards I was assigned to a post. I got to cheer everyone on. It was lots of fun encouraging everyone to finish hard and do their best.  I'm not the best runner but my mum says to give everything a go and try your hardest so that is what I did.

Here are some photos of me and some others running the course:

My place my story

I was chosen out of MLH along with seven other people to travel to Auckland for a Google Summit.  I am working on a presentation on my maps to present to everyone who is going to be attending the   Google Summit. Our map is about our life so far.

We are leaving in a van next week on Thursday,  To be honest i'm not too excited about taking a van from Gisborne to Auckland (let's hope it has air conditioning and no one gets car sick). I'm soooooo  excited about going though. Last week we had a nacho lunch. That was to fundraise for accommodation and fuel, man those nachos were good!

I will post about the Google Summit again after I finish my map or after we get back, it will be filled with photos showing you what we got up to. Here are some photos from my map so far. I have started to add in why these places are significant but trust me they are a mess so you will not want to see them at the moment I may post some of them next week though. :)

Inter school soccer

Yesterday I headed off to inter school soccer. It was a blast! I played for the girls team. There was also a mixed team. There weren't enough girls who played soccer for a school team so some other girls had to fill in. We won two games and didn't get into the finals. We still had loads of fun though. The mixed team won all of their games and brought back a trophy. Here is a photo of  my team.

Refugee

In my reading group we have started to read a book called Refugee. Each week we have questions to answer about the book. I am really enjoying the book so far! We are only allowed to read a certain amount of pages every week so we don't get too far ahead of our group. I can't wait for next week so that we can read more. Here is the blurb from the back of the book. :) Enjoy.

Fish in a Tree

At the start of term two we started reading a book called fish in a tree. It is about a girl called Ally Nickerson, she has dyslexia and learning differences.  I really like the book so far. Each week we are set with different tasks, each relating to what has happened in the book. This week I choose to do vocabulary and a short story pretending to be Ally using my senses.  Here they are. Dont forget to comment! :)

E village / Museum visit

This term so far has been so busy! So far we have  been weeding and mulching down at Hamanatua stream, we have gone to the museum and E village, we have gone on a bike trip and we have been practicing really hard for the gym festival. We have got so much more cool stuff coming up.

Our inquiry topic this term is Retro Tech. Last week we went to the museum and E village to learn more about Retro tech and technology of the future. It was so much fun at the museum we got to write our name with quills (feathers). We got to look at tonnes of other old items in the museum, I really enjoyed it.

Then we walked to the electric village. There we learnt about transport of the future. It was so cool. We got to ride on an electric scooter, complete activity  and control robots using ipads! And when we left we got a free lollipop. Overall I really enjoyed going to the museum and E village.

Escape from kraznir

Last term my early level four writing group started a story writing adventure called escape from kraznir. It is so much fun! We have some slides on our hub witch act as templates. Our writing is still a work in progress and NEEDS editing. Here is my escape Kraznir writing so far. Enjoy! :) (here is a teaser)

Term 1 refection

Overall I have really enjoyed term one. We have been up to lots of interesting stuff such as camp, duathlon,  swimming sports, mulching, we are going to make feijoa ice-cream and are going to have an easter raffle draw on Friday. I really hope I have sold the most the most tickets. I sold nine sheets that would be ninety tickets. It is the last week of the term. I will tell you next term if I won any prizes from the easter raffle and I will tell you how the ice cream went.
